Soothing space

It was one of those blisteringly hot summer days, with the sun scorching above in the skies. Entering Sooshm-the home décor store and art gallery on Baner Road – however soothed ruffled moods in more than one way. Lined with large glass windows, the gallery afforded a view of the sunny day outside but was still shaded from the heat. Known for housing some beautiful décor items,Sooshm has for the first time, opened its ground floor out to artists for exhibitions.

The store and gallery are uniformly designed, using cool whites, wooden paneling and decoration and lots of funky light fittings. There was the pleasant sound of chatter in the room,as visitors milled about the room taking in the exhibition. Sooshm, the gallery had recently held its first exhibition, where Mumbai ethnic wear brand Hauz Khas and Pune corporate gifting brand Collage put together a combined display. Through this exhibition,Sherry Kohli, the promoter of Hauz Khas, brought the label to Pune. The collection comprised several indo-western designs and was markedly festive, with the use of rich fabric in bright colours like yellow and pink. Most of the outfits could double as either a long gown to be worn independently or as a long kurta paired with a churidar and dupatta, store owner,Kamakshi Madan pointed out.

While the designer wear lined the walls of the room, creations from the Pune brand,Collage could be seen in various pockets around the gallery. At one corner, while a group of women examined and admired beautiful, heavy metal tableware such as candlesticks and metal and clay platters, another group could be spotted exclaiming over chunky metal jewellery put together by Madan and Chetna Shah from Collage. All the items on display were authentically Indian and had been sourced from different parts of the country, from expositions and tours to small villages and towns, said Shah.

The gallery will also host exhibitions with jewellery and art in the future, according to Madan. “We’re already receiving enquiries from artists and will soon begin planning the next exhibition. Art and jewellery fit in with the home décor store perfectly so we will definitely be hosting many such exhibitions,” she says.
