Solar panels to run their scooty

Innovation on an innovation. That’s what Ayub Pathan and his nephew Imran have done to turn their dream of travelling without having to pay for fuel or power for their electrical scooty, the Yo Bike.

They have gone ahead and attached a solar panel to the bike,so that it need not be charged through a plug-in socket, the solar power produced by the panel charging the battery automatically as the scooty travels in the sun.

Save the usual maintenance cost, their bike is therefore ideal as they can travel free of cost and not tax the environment either.

Imran said,“Petrol costs are rising and it is not feasible for people to use their own vehicles on a daily basis. There are already so many solar-powered inverters and batteries,so we thought why not apply them to scooters as well. This will be especially useful in villages, where long power cuts are the norm.” The best part about the scooter is that it has a strong battery back-up. “Obviously, people would also travel at night and on rainy days,so the battery will support the running of the scooter for up to 50 kilometres,” said Imran. The duo, who run a firm that explores areas where solar power can be tapped, are planning to add LED bulbs to headlights and indicators to further cut down on power consumption so that most of the power generated is used to run the bike. The Pathans have branches of their firm in Budhawar Peth,Nandedwada,Biblevadi and Ahmednagar.

They have not completely eliminated the electrical charger provided with the scooty. “We have retained the electrical charger,so in a way,the scooter is a hybrid,” said Imran.

The scooter comes with an electrical socket, where one can attach any electrical appliance, from a simple CFL bulb to a portable fan or even a DVD player. The scooter also achieves a top-speed of 40 kilometres per hour. Their project is still in the nascent stage and as of now, they have only got one prototype.

But with enquiries from people coming in,the Pathans are planning to launch the solar-panel scooters on a larger scale by Diwali.

Now,they want to replicate it on four-wheelers.
