SOFOSH row: Departmental inquiry ordered

A departmental inquiry has been ordered by the women and child department on the Shreevatsa unit of the Society for Friends of Sassoon Hospital, which houses children for adoption on the Sassoon General Hospital premises for housing “four unwed pregnant women”.

A departmental inquiry has been ordered by the women and child department on the Shreevatsa unit of the Society for Friends of Sassoon Hospital (SOFOSH),which houses children for adoption on the Sassoon General Hospital premises for housing “four unwed pregnant women”. A showcause notice was issued on July 19 by the department and SOFOSH was to give a written reply to the department.

Officers from the department maintained that the reply given by SOFOSH states that the “women were there for some medical treatment and they were not staying at the agency”. However the department has initiated a thorough inquiry.

District officers said the department would conduct the probe and necessary action will be taken. “Though we have the reply we will be checking all the details and the final decision will be taken by the department,” said Suvarna Pawar, district women and child welfare officer from the department. The officials maintained that random checks were conducted in all the adoption agencies but no discrepancies were found officially.

A random check at SOFOSH had revealed this information. The women and child welfare department conducts random checks at all agencies to ensure smooth operations. Pawar on investigation, said the agency was found to house “four unmarried pregnant women” who were found to have their luggage and seemed to be staying there for long. It was found that they had left their homes following pregnancy. The SOFOSH’s Shreevatsa unit is an adoption agency and it cannot house women. They need to take separate permission for housing needy women. The agency, which has been carrying out several adoption awareness programmes,is among the nine adoption agencies in Pune helping people to adopt children.
