Twelve environmental organisations, 33 colleges, 25 schools from Ramnadi basin, and environmental experts have been working for the project.

Several social organisations have plans to create a holistic and sustainable model for the restoration of the ecosystem around Ramnadi in Pune district, by assisting housing complexes and educational institutes alongside.
“The government authorities have been working on a bigger plan for the restoration of Ramnadi. The PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) has also planned a detailed project report (DPR) for the riverfront of 700-metre stretch of Ramnadi at its confluence with Mula river,” said Virendra Chitrav of Kirloskar Vasundhara, the organisation which has taken up the river restoration work for the last four years.
Chitrav said that the several government authorities have been cooperating for the river restoration and many social organisations have come forward for the initiative. “Kirloskar Vasundhara and Rotary Club have joined hands to make the restoration model holistic and sustainable,” he said.
The 19.2-km of Ramnadi, starting from outside the city till the confluence, has been encroached upon, with dumping of debris and releasing of sewage waste into the river.
Twelve environmental organisations, 33 colleges, 25 schools from Ramnadi basin, and environmental experts have been working for the project.
“The objective has been the restoration of Ramnadi closest to its former state — a continuous flow of river water, while creating a holistic and sustainable model for the same,” said R R Despande, chairman of Kirloskar Vasundhara.
Gurudas Nulkar, professor and director of Centre for Sustainable Development at Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, said that “an ecological approach will be used for the entire river basin, and awareness for ecological sanitation and sustainable toxic-free lifestyle among the residents would be created.”
