Snob Meter Running

Some popular restaurants in the city are as famed for some snobbish, often bizarre, policies as much for their food.

One goes to a restaurant to 1) have a good meal; 2) have conversations with friends or family; 3) both of the previous. In this gastronomic-cum-socialising endeavour, sometimes unexpected snags pop up. They often crop up from the eatery’s side of things. Some instances smack of unpardonable snobbery, and others, surprising weirdness. Here are a few that have scarred the imaginations of a few patrons.

Balloon-scare

An evening stroll on MG road might lead you to this eatery famous for its refreshing juices, fresh fruits with cream and stuffed parathas. If you plan to sit outside and you are accompanied by a kid,try to keep the bundle of joy distracted. This eatery forbids the entry of balloons and dogs in the premises. “I had to leave my food to pacify my child who was tempted to buy a bird-shaped balloon. I agree with not allowing dogs into the eatery. However, balloons can keep children occupied while we indulge into their yummy delicacies,” says Madhu Kamble,a school teacher.

A Bad Hair Day

One cannot miss the walls of this eatery on F C Road, for the notices put up to prevent combing of hair, untangling them, running the fingers through them absent-mindedly or just barely re-tying your tresses. The food here is mouth-watering but the long queues and the hungry faces waiting for their turn might just coax you to gobble it down without enjoying its taste. In the haste to attend to all the customers, waiters disagree to change your plates for main course, once you are done with the starters. “If it is hygiene that they are concerned about, then prohibiting combing of hair is right on their part,” says home-maker Arpita Dutta Gupta, who frequents this joint for its yummy non vegetarian choices of food.

Boys are Bad

This upmarket eatery in Baner forbids an all-boys group in the restaurant, serving only family. “It was insulting when we were literally driven out of the place on the pretext of not having a girl in our group. They had no right to deny us as we did not even order alcoholic drinks,” says Raja Simha Chinta,an IT professional. Girls,as they say,are the bearers of modesty, the restaurant owners feel!

Pricey Cakes

Just when you are craving to indulge in your favourite cake for your birthday, this coffee shop, which has branches at F C Road,Baner and Model Colony might act as spoil sport. For birthday celebrations in this eatery,it is mandatory to buy the cake from their shop. A cake brought from outside will be service taxed at 10 per cent extra on the bill.

Read Not Please!

This eatery is a haven for the best comfort food on the busy MG road. The upstairs view is brilliant, and a feeling of wanting to kick back and relax can take over rather easily. But don’t even think about going through the day’s newspapers,or magazines, here. A minder specially commissioned to shoo off offenders will swoop down on you and will offer no explanations. Or make any exceptions.

Forget Fizz

This fish eatery is a true seafood utopia. It is tiny, but cozy, the staff is efficient and attentive, the food is brilliantly fresh, and best of all,the place is immaculately clean. But if in the midst of gorging on some fiery concoctions your throat cries out for cola comfort, you won’t get any. The restaurant,by strict policy, doesn’t stock any cold drinks. Keep it traditional, and gulp down solkadi, kokam and family.
