During the ongoing Sleep Awareness Month,March-April will have an array of events to highlight importance of sleep

With many hospitals and pharmaceutical majors as supporters,Indian Sleep Disorders Association (ISDA) is observing March-April as Sleep Awareness Month. The fourth Sleep Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about sleep disorders and highlight the importance of recognising lack of sleep as a serious health condition which can be treated. “Nearly one in three Indians suffer from insomnia or other sleep disorders.

Says Dr J C Suri, president,ISDA,”The importance of sleep can be seen from the fact that people spend about one-third of their lifespan sleeping. However, increasing competition at the workplace, hectic lifestyle and stress have resulted in a higher incidence of sleep related disorders, especially among urban Indians. It is important to create awareness about sleep disorders so that people recognise not only the symptoms but also understand that it is a treatable condition.”

During this month,ISDA is organising various awareness activities with healthcare professionals, who are experts in the field of insomnia and other sleep related issues,in metros and tier-I cities across India.

Abbott India has also jopined the campaign with Vidya Balan as the ambassador of Sleep Awareness Month. Vidya Balan,”I am happy to be associated with the Sleep Awareness Month. In our busy lives we do not pay much attention to sleep or the lack of it. Getting a good night’s sleep is as important as having your daily dose of Vitamins. In case you are facing irregular sleep habits,it is important to approach your local doctor for a checkup”.

Sleep disorders are primarily lifeststyle related and are often not taken seriously by people due to lack of awareness of the symptoms and risks associated with it. Alterations in the quality, quantity and pattern of sleep result in sleep disorders thereby affecting the health of an individual. Undiagnosed and untreated sleep disorders cause not only misery to the sufferer but can also result in other diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or CVD. Though there are more than 100 identified sleep disorders, the most common sleep complaints can be categorized into five, namely, hypersomnia, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, and sleep disorders associated with mental, neurological, and other medical disorders.
