With a special chef designated just for desserts, the Cafe Bay Leaf at Holiday Inn,Hinjewadi,is a treat for the sweet toothed
The evening began with a ride to the outskirts of the city. Our destination – the newly opened Holiday Inn at Hinjewadi. Sparkling new,the hotel has opened just one of its restaurants the Bay Leaf,a multi-cuisine restaurant. Boasting of high ceilings, the interiors are done up in a tasteful off-white and brown combination, with wooden flooring.
We begin our meal with starters, which consist of Chicken Chandani Kebab and Fish Salt and Pepper. The chicken is soft and tender, the meat melting in the mouth, but the fish comes as a disappointment. Lukewarm,it doesnt have that freshness that one looks for in a seafood meal. The marination too seems to have not been done long enough. The next dish is the Bacon and Apple Salad, which consists of bacon strips with apple wedges. The bacon, glistening with fat,is surprisingly well complemented by the apple. To round off the starters is the Lamb and Zuccini Salad, that is so well made that the meat breaks off and is cooked to just the right amount, leaving it soft and tender, rather than being hard or stringy.
For the main course, there is a whole array of rice and noodles, but surprisingly, all the gravy dishes are essentially Indian. Thus,we go in for the Fried Rice, cooked Indian style. If the cook has used oil,he has strained it well the end result consists of fine grains of rice, which do not stick together. There are three different curry dishes to choose from. The first dish is the Tunisian Fish Balls, and the difference between this and the starter cannot be clearer. The fish is soft and juicy, and its red gravy is tangy, yet not spicy. Though it looks like it will go well with the glass noodles on offer,it actually teams better with the rice. The next is the Veal Osso Bucco, and in our opinion, the pick of the dishes. Soft and tender, the meat literally melts off the fork, and is soft, succulent with a slight hint of spice. Also on offer is the Chicken Hyderabadi, which is cooked with a very spicy green curry. If you cant handle chilli, stay far,far away from it. If you can, then go ahead, have a blast!
However, the real treat lies with the desserts. With a chef designated purely for pastries,we know we are in for a treat. We first have the Truffle Chocolate Cake, which is like a festival of chocolate exploding in the mouth. It is so creamy that we jokingly wonder whether people come to the restaurant just to have a meal of the truffle. We also have the lemon cake, which has a very soft, delicious base with a slightly sour-tasting top.
All in all,the food is quite delicious. However, what really stand out are the pastries, and for that alone, the long journey to the hotel is worth it.
