Shakespeare can never become outdated, according to Prashant Sinha, former faculty,University of Pune.

Speaking at a function to release Vintage Shakespeare, edited by Sinha and Mohini Khot,he said the Bard of Avon was still a favourite in India.

The book was released by B G Deshmukh and Makarand Sathe at ICC Trade Towers,Senapati Bapat Road,on Saturday.

Vintage Shakespeare is a collection of articles and essays contributed by Shakespearean scholars and writers from the USA,UK,India,Bangladesh and Australia. “The essays focus on the plays of the middle phase of Shakespeare that spawned the Problem plays, the Roman plays and the tragedies. The writers have used interpretations and points of view that arise from their different cultures. The collection represents a celebration of the continuing interest in Shakespearean studies around the world,” adds Khot.

B G Deshmukh, who has authored books like A Cabinet Secretary Looks Back, felt that English language is meant for learning Shakespeare. “The characters woven by him are timeless. They cut across all sections of society to reach the audience,” said Sathe, who is also an eminent playwright-director.

B S Korde,Head of the department,English,UoP,said,“Generation after generation will continue the tradition of studying Shakespeare. If one removes the study of Shakespeare,we will be illogically eradicating a milestone from English literature.”

A wide variety of approaches are used in the essays as modes of analysis. The book also has a collection of papers presented at an international seminar on Shakespeare.
