Having a fling with their looks,a few men and women believe in meeting a new self from time to time in terms of hairstyles and clothing
It takes a lot of nerve to stand out in the crowd with astonishing orange hair or a fancy handle bar moustache. Many admire and marvel at their own creativity by wearing sassy clothes with ritzy big stone accessories within the four walls of their secure house, and click a few pictures to flaunt it. However, when it comes to stepping out of the door, there is a pang of reluctance that hits, followed by a quick slip into the subtle and low profile clothes to avoid strange stares and looks from passers by. As against the myth that only the youth can experiment with looks and carry it off well, many bravehearts in their forties, who not only dare to try something new but also carry it off with a panache.
Monica Trivedi, freelance columnist and a known face in the fashion circuit, believes that there is no harm in following one’s heart. “I always think out of the box when it comes to my appearance,in fact,I maintained a diary of what I wore to college. I go by my instinct when it comes to buying my clothes – it could be a cut,a colour or for that matter,a quirky look – that catches my attention. I feel that my hair is my asset,no matter what I do,it will come back to me as it was. Of late I have been experimenting with my looks with bold hair colours. I make most of my coloured hair by wearing clothes and jewelry that compliment it. At present Trivedi flaunts a green streak and her new resolution is to go bald in the next five years to give herself a complete revamp.
All it needs is a change of attitude to get over the what will others think syndrome. From hairstyle to hair colour and clothing to jewelry many factors have a lot of scope for change. Earlier, for retro-sexual men, facial hair was never such an asset, however, now it provides much scope for a total makeover with just a creative trimming.
Shakya, hair stylist,Juice Salon says,”The most common demand is that of a younger look, however, the stress is on subtle change. But a few of my female clients in their forties do dare to do away with their long tresses and also use bold streaks to highlight it.
Men,too, are not compromising when it comes to looks. I have men coming and asking for spikes or mohawks with pink or green streak, however, keeping in mind their professional environment, they also use lot of products like gel or styling mousse for a change in look according to the occasion, says Shakya
Known for frequent experimentation with his looks,Raman Bhende,an interior designer by profession, loves to go over the top with his looks, experimenting with his hair by either keeping it too long or too short. “Being in a profession that demands creativity,I don’t hesitate from changes be it my clothes or hairstyles. My attire depends on my mood,so it is never the same. And my safest experiments have been with my facial hair and in a few weeks I will be found adorning a long goatee.”
As the clichés goes Where there is a will there is a way. Given the attitude that men and women are flaunting now, even designers have a whole range of garments for them. “Though not many,we do have people who don’t mind trying new colours or even cuts. The mantra is to look stylish, the method doesn’t matter to them. So many designers are coming up with a range of clothes that many appreciate but only a few can sport. Right from contrasting colours to narrow fit dresses they are game for all,” says Rasika Wakalkar, designer.
While big girls and boys try it for younger look,a few youngsters find simple fun as a motivation behind their experiments. With streaks of blue and purple,Ajoy Menezes, engineering college student plans to steal all the attention of his friends, especially female friends. “If a slight change gives a total makeover and also earns me admirers and girlfriends, why not. Its fun to look at yourself in the mirror with those looks, which others usually feel reluctant to try. And with the growing fanlist,I am sure that my experiments are successful so far,and if in any case I fail to impress them,at least I can satisfy myself.”
