Schools play safe, ask parents to do the same

With four swine flu deaths in the city in a week, several schools have adopted a ‘better safe than sorry’ attitude and asked parents not to send their children to school, even if they have an examination,if they have a cold, cough or fever.

With four swine flu (H1N1) deaths in the city in a week, several schools have adopted a ‘better safe than sorry’ attitude and asked parents not to send their children to school, even if they have an examination,if they have a cold, cough or fever.

Stressing that there is no reason for any panic,Frank Freese, principal,Bishop’s School, said,“Sometimes, parents can be irrational. Even if their child is burning with fever, they send them for a 10-mark test. We have asked parents to not send their children to attend classes or tests if they are unwell. No child will be affected if they miss a test or exam; they will not have to repeat the year.”

On Saturday, the school also arranged for a team of doctors to do a check-up of boarders. In addition to this, boarders have been supplied with sanitisers and tissues.

“We have asked parents of day scholars to supply children with sanitisers and tissues. We’ve ordered large bottles of disinfectants like Dettol for all our three schools. The desks in each classroom will be cleaned and sanitised every morning,” he added.

DAV Public School,

Aundh, already has a liberal examination policy.

Parents of students have been informed that if their child is unwell,he or she will be exempted from examinations.

Jayshree Venkatraman, principal,DAV Public School, said,“If a child seems unwell and comes to school,we will need a medical clearance letter. This has also been communicated to our staff, ancillary staff and attendants.”

The precautionary move by schools was hailed by S T Pardeshi, chief health officer,Pune Municipal Corporation. “The two deaths have not been caused wholly due to swine flu; there have been associated reasons. But it’s a good thing that schools are encouraging children to be safe. Staying at home if they are unwell is the best precaution,” he said.

Kirti Sharma, principal,Kendriya Vidyalaya, said there hasn’t been any case to worry about so far in her school.

“Our final exams are on and if a child is unwell. it is the parents’ decision to allow him or her to appear for the examination. If they choose to not send their child for the exam,we will stand by their decision,” Sharma said.

The school will make arrangements for students as per the situation. “If the need arises, the child can even sit in a separate room and appear for the exam,” she added.
