Around 50 students of DAV Public School,Aundh, are all set to research, design and build electric toy cars with gears. The initiative Student Automotive Design Challenge (SADC) a joint effort by Honeywell Turbo Technology and Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE) was launched in the school last week. The copyright of the design remains with Honeywell but the students will keep the finished products. The competition is open for Classes V,VI and VII students.
This is the second year of the initiative. Students work on the project for two months in the academic year, usually in October-November,with help from volunteers, who are employees of Honeywell with engineering background.
Students get to understand the logic and calculations that go into building a car. The motive behind this initiative is to encourage students to take up science and mathematics and explore potential career opportunities, said Apurv Choubey,Director (HR),Honeywell.
Students are divided into a team of three and each are given a kit comprising gears, car body, wheels and other parts. They do not have to just build the car,but also fulfill regular targets like the toy car achieving a speed of three metres in two seconds or elevation of 50 degrees.
It is one of the few initiatives that allows students to go beyond textbooks, said Jayashree Venkataraman,DAV School principal. In the last week of the programme, each class has to select the winning vehicle.
Choubey said students get to understand the application of concepts like gear ratio, elevation, calculation of speed. There is no entry fee to be a part of this activity, he said.
Honeywell has been trying to expand this activity to other schools.
