A gang of seven people armed with revolvers barged into Mahendra Jewellers, located off Laxmi Road at the Umbrya Ganpati Chowk and decamped with a booty of Rs 28 lakh on Monday afternoon. However, two of the dacoits were nabbed by residents while escaping and were handed over to the police. Their interrogation led the police to arrest three more accomplices from a Dhanori lodge.
Of the five suspects arrested in this case, three have been identified as Sanjay Sahu,Ajitsingh Gangadhar Singh and Mantu Singh, all from Jharkhand.
According to the police, the dacoits entered the shop and closed the shutter. After turning a gun at the shop owners Ramesh and Mahendra Solanki, the dacoits tied their employee Umesh Sathe with a rope. The dacoits were carrying staplers and revolver butts. Then they looted the gold jewellery, filled it in bags and moved out of the shop.
As soon as the dacoits left, the Solanki brothers came out crying for help. A number of alert residents started chasing the dacoits and nabbed two of them. The others managed to escape.
The two suspects were beaten up by angry citizens on the spot. The police took them into custody after reaching the spot. During their interrogation, the police got the information about their accomplices. The police teams then nabbed three more suspects at a Dhanowri lodge in the evening.
Prashan Solanki, son of Ramesh, said one of the robbers had come to the shop first saying that he wanted to book an ornament. As he distracted their attention, six more persons with revolvers entered the shop.
Senior police officers including additional commissioner of police Prabhat Kumar visited the scene.
