Relocation options given by Army non-feasible: PWC

PWC officials, however, said the said options had been offered much earlier had been rejected by LMA.

Army authorities have offered several options for Poona Women’s Council (PWC) School but was firm on its stand that the premises the school has been occupying for 89 years needs to be vacated. In a press release on Wednesday, the Local Military Authority (LMA) said PWC may look for alternate locations within Pune Cantonment and inform LMA.

PWC officials, however, said the said options had been offered much earlier had been rejected by LMA.

The LMA press release states,“Children can be accommodated at Asha School run by the Army Wives Welfare Association,or the ZHEP School in cantonment,or the school run by PWC at Kahun Road. PWC may identify a suitable site and inform LMA. PWC may approach the DC or civil authorities for allotment of an alternate site.”

Rakhi Shetty, president of PWC said the said options were already found non-feasible.

The Army was firm on PWC moving out of 5A Rajendrasinhaji Road. “The school functions from a building on A-1 Defence Land. The occupation of this building by the Women’s Council is illegal and not tenable. The policy laid down on the subject stipulates that A-1 Defence Land cannot be utilized for non-military purposes. Moreover, the land is required by military authorities for own use. Keeping in view services being rendered by PWC to children, the LMA has considered the issue with compassion rather than strictly legal terms. The Army authorities have offered alternate sites to PWC. The PWC has been offered the above options and has been requested to vacate the present premises to avoid further violation of rules. The endeavour of the Army Authorities is to resolve the issue amicably by assisting PWC in exercising any of the above options,” the press release said.
