An art gallery and museum are being set up at Rajwada at Chikhli in Pimpri-Chinchwad area and the renovation work of the historic structure has begun. It is likely to be completed early next year. Rajwada fort is one of its kind in the jurisdiction of the industrial town of Pimpri-Chinchwad.

It was built in 1722 by Devji Patil Tapkir family of Chikhli. Devji was son of Dulbaji who was a Sardar in Chhatrapati Shivaji’s army.

The construction of Rajwada started seven years before construction of the Shaniwarwada.

In 1845,Amarsinh Jadhavrao family took over the fort from the Tapkirs. The family, which looks after upkeep and maintenance of the fort, plans to overhaul it,to make it a major tourist attraction of Pimpri-Chinchwad where there are hardly any spots that draw crowds.

Jadhavrao said the museum will house traditional Maratha weapons like spears, swords and shields which were used during battles in those times.

“Some weapons are still with us. We have urged family members and friends to gift us with such weapons if they are in their possession so that they could be displayed at the museum,” said Jadhavrao. Besides,he said, they will get ornaments historic personalities used to wear. The art gallery,he said, will be another attraction of the fort as paintings and sculptures will adorn it.

Jadhavrao said all the three floors of the fort are being renovated in phases. “The first and the second floor would be taken up first,” he said.

Jadhavrao said they would not spare any effort to make Rajwada fort a major tourist attraction. “We are not taking any money from anybody. Neither from the state government nor from donors. Right from maintaining the fort to overhauling it inside out,it is a moment of pride for the Jadhavrao family,” he said.
