Rains play truant,no revival for four days

It’s been almost a week now since the city witnessed any rains and according to the weatherman there are no signs of revival in next four days.

It’s been almost a week now since the city witnessed any rains and according to the weatherman there are no signs of revival in next four days. With negligible rainfall in the catchment area, the levels of the storage there have not increased for last few days. The present storage is 68.6 per cent.

After the heavy rainfall in the first three weeks of July, there has been a lull in the rain activity in the city. “The monsoon activity is subdued as the trough of low pressure area has shifted northwards,” said Medha Khole, director of weather section of IMD,Pune. “There is no likely revival in the next three to four days,” she said.

“The western part of the axis of monsoon trough runs close to the foothills of Himalayas and thence southeastwards to east central Bay of Bengal. However, subdued rainfall activity is likely over west coast,” said Khole. “With no signs of formation of low pressure over Bay of Bengal, the rainfall will not increase in near future,” she said.

However,Khole clarified that it was not abnormal. “It is a natural variability during the monsoon season. The IMD has predicted 101 per cent rains in August. It can still make it up as there is long way to go,” she said.

Meanwhile, the present storage capacity of four dams in Pune district has gone up to 19.08 TMC or 68.6 per cent. “There is negligible rainfall in the catchment areas of all the four dams — Panshet,Varasgaon,Temghar and Khadakwasla. Though the situation is better compared to June, the two big dams — Panshet and Varasgaon —need to be filled,” said Avinash Surve, superintending engineer of Pune irrigation circle.

The present levels of storage in dams are: (Figures in TMC) Khadakwasla: 1.73,Panshet: 7.37,Varasgaon: 7.54 and Temghar: 2.35.
