Ragging case papers sent back to Ahmednagar

In a fresh development in the ragging case of Pune-based Deccan Education Society (DES) Law College student, the Pune police returned the case papers to the Ahmednagar police.

In a fresh development in the ragging case of Pune-based Deccan Education Society (DES) Law College student, the Pune police returned the case papers to the Ahmednagar police. The Pune police have refused to register the ragging complaint at the Deccan Gymhana police station and have decided to support the Ahmednagar police in investigating the case.

An offence of ragging was registered against a few students of DES College for allegedly ragging Prashant Chitalkar (22),a student of second year law of the same college, who committed suicide at Khadamble village in Rahuri taluka in Ahmednagar on Sunday.

Prashant’s father Bandopant Gulab Chitalkar,a police havaldar at Kotwali police station in Ahmednagar, had lodged the complaint of ragging at the Rahuri police station that was later forwarded to the Deccan Gymkhana police station in Pune for further investigation. The Pune police, however, sent the case documents back to the Ahmednagar police.

Vijay Chavan,Superintendent of Ahmednagar police, said,“I don’t know why the police have returned the papers of the case. We had transferred the case to Pune police because the alleged incident of ragging took place in their jurisdiction. I have now ordered the officers at Rahuri police station to investigate the ragging complaint.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone I) Dnyaneshwar Phadtare said it was wrong to transfer the ragging complaint to Pune. “The incident of suicide took place at Ahmednagar but there was no suicide note. As per the papers send by the Ahmednagar police, the student who committed suicide was being ragged for over a year. But the DES College authorities claim they were not aware of such a thing,” Phadtare said.

“So far there is no evidence to confirm ragging. The Deccan police station team is probing the allegations. We are supporting the Ahmednagar police in their investigations. We will register a complaint only ragging is cinfirmed,” he said. Phadtare said Deccan police would question the students whose names have been mentioned in the ragging complaint with Ahmednagar police. “The probe is on and we cannot share more details now,” he said.

The complaint said Sudarshan Shelke,Chetan Mahale,Sharad Bande,Rohan Balve and a few others from the college were harassing Prashant on the college premises.
