This month,Lt Gen Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik became probably the first Maharashtrian to take over the strategically important, prestigious and sensitive Northern Command (J&K) as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief and the reaction of his family members in Pune was,’it’s a most deserved appointment’.
“He is a great officer, tall on values. People love him and love to respect him,a difficult combination for a man in uniform. As always,we are sure he will handle such an important command with great efficiency,” said his son Advait Parnaik.
Lt General Parnaik,an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA),took over the Northern Command on January 1. Three generations of his family have served the Indian armed forces and Lt General Parnaik, who belongs to Pune, was commissioned in the 2 Rajputana Rifles on March 31,1972.
Advait, who works for the technical sales department of a software giant in the city, said,”Unfortunately,he was never posted to Pune. Throughout my childhood, dad was posted at places such as Rajasthan,Lucknow,Sagar,Bhutan,Dehradun,Jammu Nagaland and other parts of North East. Military life has been an integral part of my growing up. But when it came to my career,he never forced me to join the armed forces. His concern was that I do what I like to.”
Lt Gen Parnaik had commanded the 2 Rajputana Rifles of the Kargil fame and a sensitive infantry brigade in J&K during Operation Parakram where he was awarded Yudh Seva Medal. His higher command experience includes an important Mountain Division in Sikkim and a Corps in Arunanchal/Assam where he was awarded Uttam Yudh Seva Medal for outstanding services in the operational environment. He has instructional experience serving in almost all significant departments of the Army Headquarters and also had an eventful tenure abroad as Chief of Staff of the UN Mission in Angola.
Knowing him well,I know he is a master in handling people. Heading a sensitive command such as the Northern Command is a challenging task and we know that the next two years are going to be very hectic for him. But we know he will do very well, said his daughter-in-law Naina.
