Pune District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) in collaboration with Delhi-based Social Axiom Foundation has initiated a month-long outreach campaign to promote Children’s Safety and Well-Being in around 240 government schools in Pune district as a part of Project CACA (Children Against Child Abuse).

PDLSA secretary Sonal Patil said the campaign will focus on programmes under the school’s safety policy to keep children happy, healthy and safe. She said the team will jointly conduct drills in schools by providing CACA safety workbooks to parents and teachers in English, Hindi and regional languages.

Discussions in this regard were initiated via video conference on October 11 with parents, school teachers and principals, and will now continue through in-person interaction and training in schools.

“We will move from school to school with children’s picture books, teachers’ manuals, posters and other important booklets. Research, workshops, assessments and annual psychology quizzes will also be part of the CACA project,” she said. Over the course of the month-long campaign, training will cover a diverse range of safety issues and different approaches including legal, academic and psychological to prevent child abuse.

Talking about judiciary laws, advocate Neha Tyagi highlighted the various types of crimes and offences against children and women. She spoke to guardians and school teaching staff about the significance of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act of 2012, the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015 and various other laws. The campaign will see the participation of judges, Supreme Court lawyers, academicians, psychiatrists, paediatricians and school counsellors, as per the official.

“Central and state governments should provide periodic training including orientation programmes, sensitisation workshops and courses,” Patil said.
