Pune RTO records over 3 lakh vehicle registrations in a year
Data from 2021 to 2024 reveals a consistent increase in vehicle purchases. However, the growth rate has been gradually declining over the years.

Though the Pune RTO recorded a modest three percent growth in vehicle registrations from January to December 2024 compared to 2023, it managed to surpass the milestone of 3 lakh vehicle registrations in a single year. As per the RTO data, motorcycles (two-wheelers) are gradually moving toward the two-lakh mark.
Data from 2021 to 2024 reveals a consistent increase in vehicle purchases. However, the growth rate has been gradually declining over the years.
In 2024, vehicle registrations grew by 3.47 percent compared to 2023, totalling 3.03 lakh transport and non-transport vehicles. In contrast, 2023 witnessed a stronger growth of approximately 15 percent, with 2.93 lakh vehicles registered from January to December, compared to 2.54 lakh vehicles during the same period in 2022. The year 2022 experienced a remarkable 52 percent growth in vehicle registrations, which RTO officials attributed to the post-pandemic recovery effect.
The Pune RTO data also reveals that the top four categories of vehicles purchased are motorcycles (two-wheelers), cars, auto rickshaws, and goods carriers.
The overall trend shows that the number of two-wheelers in the city has been constantly increasing over the last three years from 2022 to 2024. Two-wheelers alone contributed around 60 percent of the total vehicles registered in 2024. During the same period, cars, three-wheelers, and goods carriers either steadily increased or remained consistent.
Notably, goods-carrying vehicles contribute very little—just 3 percent of total vehicles. However, their numbers are increasing every year at a growth rate of 2 to 3 percent. The only exceptional surge was a 42 percent growth rate recorded in 2022, compared to the Covid year of 2021.
Although autorickshaws have shown growth, alternating between increases and decreases in successive years, auto drivers in the city have strongly opposed the issuance of new permits. According to Swapnil Bhosle, Deputy RTO, the claim of growth in autos in the city is not true, as many people continue to complain about the lack of auto availability in various locations.
Regarding last year’s 15 percent growth in overall vehicles, the then RTO official, Sanjeev Bhor, explained at the time that since Pune is a Metro city and an IT hub, development has continued, leading to significant migration to Pune. As a result, many people primarily consider purchasing two-wheelers for their convenience.
