Pune's Shivajinagar station recorded the highest rainfall in 12 years at 114 mm

Waterlogged underpasses, submerged bridges, collapsed walls and trapped citizens — the city of Pune reeled under heavy rainfall on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next two days for the city.
The Indian Express team captured the magnum of the impact on the city under the heavy downpour and aid efforts made by the Fire Services and the National Disaster Response force (NDRF) is rescuing and evacuating stranded citizens. Take a look:

160 people stuck and stranded in houses and buildings on slopes and low lying areas were rescued the Pune Fire Brigade officials said. The Mula-Mutha, the crucial river which flows through the region, experienced an increase in the water level and the primary source of water supply — Pavana Dam — for Pimpri-Chinchwad, had been filled up to 58 per cent on Wednesday leading to road closures and traffic disruption across the region.

Schools in the city and nearby areas were shut, following an order by collector Suhas Diwase in view of incessant rains in the region as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a red alert.

Pune Collector Suhas Diwase confirmed that two incidents of landslides had been reported in rural Pune. One was at the Tamhini Ghat in Maval tehsil near Lavasa, where the NDRF ream had reached. Three persons were reported to be stuck, while an operation was underway for their rescue.

The Fire Brigade responded to 16 incidents since midnight for rain related incidents where water had entered houses, residential and commercial buildings. Over 200 firefighters and officers of the fire brigade are currently deployed in various parts of the city.

Pavana Dam, Pimpri-Chinchwad’s main source of water supply for, has been filled up to 58 per cent of its capacity by Wednesday afternoon following incessant rain in Maval taluka of Pune district.

Shivajinagar’s station at 114 mm recorded highest rainfall in 12 years. Most of the places reported historic high rainfall in the last 24 hours with Lavale at 166 mm.

In 24 hours, Pune City Fire Brigade responded to three incidents of wall collapse, six incidents of water entering houses and 45 incidents of trees falling. No casualties were reported in these incidents.

Several bridges including the Mundhwa bridge near Hadapsar, Shantinagar bridge near Yerwada, bridge over Mula river in Balewadi, Holkar bridge near Sangamwadi had been submerged which led to restriction on traffic movement in the areas, Diwase confirmed.

The incessant rains have claimed four lives so far, including three dead due to electrocution through water during the heavy rainfall at Pulachi Wadi in the Deccan Gymkhana area in the early hours today. Meanwhile, one person died and another was injured in a landslide that occurred in Adarwadi village in Maval tehsil.

Two teams from NDRF had been dispatched for Ekta Nagari in Sinhagad Road area of Pune where a number of people are stuck in houses amidst waterlogging, NDRF officials said. Meanwhile, third team of the NDRF had been requisitioned for deployment in Warje area of Pune, they added.
