The administration of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Thursday said that efforts are underway to expedite the 31-kilometre-long pipe-laying work from Bhama Askhed dam to Pimpri-Chinchwad to ease the water crisis in the city.

Currently, the entire industrial city is getting water supply on alternate days. Once the project is completed, the administration targets to make available 167 MLD water from the dam so that the city would start getting water on a daily basis.

“In the next six months, we expect to get all clearances from different government agencies. And after that, it will take at least one-and-a-half years to complete the work,” Additional Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Jambhle told The Indian Express.

“We have so far completed 11 km of work,” said Jambhle.

The first step involves laying a pipeline from the dam to Navlalkh Umre near Talegaon, which is up to 7 km. The second step involves laying a pipeline from Navlakh Umre to Chikhli in Pimpri-Chinchwad, which is about 24 kilometres. The entire cost of the project is Rs 161 crore.

Once the work of laying a direct pipeline from Bhama Askhed dam located in Maval taluka to Pimpri-Chinchwad is completed, the industrial city of Pimpri-Chinchwad will get additional 167 MLD water. Last month, the Pimpri-Chinchwad region started getting 100 MLD water from Andra dam, also located in Maval taluka. The PCMC currently draws around 450 MLD of water from the Pavana dam.

The civic administration is laying the pipeline in the areas it has acquired. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during his visit to Pimpri-Chinchwad last month directed the district officials to ensure that the PCMC is able to acquire the land for laying the pipeline as soon as possible,” officials said, adding that so far three meetings have been held with district officials.
