Monday morning saw Pune’s Shivajinagar Automatic Weather Station (AWS) recording a significant dip in the minimum temperature with the mercury touching 7.8 degree Celsius – much lower than Saturday’s record of 9 degree Celsius.

Officially, Monday morning saw the season’s lowest temperature in Pune with the station at NDA – with its vast green expanses and little or no construction – recording the lowest temperature in the district at 6.1 degree Celsius.

Pune city and other parts of the district have reported a significant dip in minimum temperatures since the last weekend as cold air from the North has started making its mark in the area. This drop, which is synonymous with the December-February winter season, was delayed by 15 days as moisture incursion saw the minimum temperature rising, experts said.

However, the formation of a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea has now caused depletion of moisture and a steady dip in temperature.

With this, December 16 has become Pune’s seventh coldest day on record in the last 10 years. Between 2013 and 2023, the lowest minimum temperature recorded was 5.9 degree Celsius in 2018.

December, by far, has been colder than usual for Pune but the trend is expected to change. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recorded a dip in temperature across the district. The AWS in Shirur recorded 6.2 degree Celsius, while Malin, Daund, Baramati all recorded 7.3 degree Celsius. Twelve of the 26 AWS in the district have recorded single-digit temperatures.

In contrast, highly urbanised areas of the city like Magarpatta, Koregaon Park or Chinchwad have recorded higher minimum temperatures. These areas, due to the lack of green cover, take longer to cool down compared to places like Shivajinagar or Pashan. During summer, these areas exhibit higher maximum temperature due to the same reason.
