Pune girls crowned inter-district basketball champs

The Pune district girls team was crowned the winners of the 64th edition of the Senior State Inter-District Basketball Championship. Pune beat Thane 40-35 in the final match of the tournament played in Satara. In the semifinals,Pune defeated Mumbai North by a crushing 64-35 scoreline. In the final,Pune were propelled by India international Shireen Limaye’s 23 points. Shriya Joshi lent a helping hand to Limaye,recording nine points. In the men’s category,Pune were beaten by Mumbai South East 77-44. Siddhanth Shinde logged 22 points while Ajinkya Mehta scored seven points. However,the rest of the team failed to back the duo.

Thombare clinches maiden ITF title

Prarthana Thombare bagged her maiden ITF singles title on Saturday when she overcame a stiff challenge from Chinese Taipei’s Ching-Wen Hsu 6-3,6-7 (10/12),6-4 in the $15000 ITF women’s tournament at the tennis courts of the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai. The top seed from Solapur,who has won four doubles titles this year,had to work extremely hard in the three-hour encounter but managed to keep her cool in the third set to wrap up the match and bagged 20 ranking points. Thombare,who is supported by Lakshya-Bharat Forge,trains under Hemant Bendrey at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana.

Guru Teg football tourney from Nov 24

The 13th edition of the Guru Teg Bahadur state-level football tournament will begin on November 24. As many as 45 teams from across the state are expected to participate in the tournament being organised by Guru Teg Bahadur Sports Foundation. The tournament,which will be played at the Range Hills football ground in Khadki,carries a total cash prize of Rs 90,000. The tournament will be conducted under the auspices of Poona District Football Association and Western India Football Association. Interested teams should contact Deepak Bhalerao on 9850940032.

T20: Mahesh Bank,Vistacore record victories

Mahesh Bank recorded a 29-run victory over PYC in the Atharva Patson All-India Twenty20 tournament at the Shinde High School grounds on Saturday. Batting first,Mahesh Bank posted 251 runs for the loss of two wickets in their 20 overs. Rahul Tripathi was the star for Mahesh Bank as he cracked 134 runs off just 59 balls,smashing 11 fours and 11 sixes in his blistering knock. In reply,PYC could only manage 222 runs for the loss of eight wickets. In the second match of the day,Vistacore defeated HDFC by 78 runs. Batting first Vistacore scored 193 runs for the loss of two wickets in 20 overs. Amey Soman scored 87 off 49 balls while Virag Awate hit 68 off 47 balls. In reply,HDFC never really got going and finished at 115 for five in their 20 overs. ENS
