Gangster lodged in jail extorts money from Pune businessman, FIR lodged

Police said the gangster Tabrez Mehboob Sutar, a resident of Katraj, has been lodged in jail since March 2022 and is facing seven criminal cases including three murders.

Pune city police have booked a gangster for allegedly making extortion calls to a businessman from jail.

Police said the gangster Tabrez Mehboob Sutar, a resident of Katraj, has been lodged in jail since March 2022 and is facing seven criminal cases including three murders.

As per a press release issued on Friday, a Pune based electrics and real estate businessman filed a complaint recently against Tabrez at the anti extortion cell of the Pune city police crime branch.

The complainant told the cops that Tabrez allegedly demanded money from him saying he had made huge profits. Tabrez and his aides allegedly told the complainant to pay money if he wanted his business to continue functioning smoothly.

Police said the gangsters even accepted Rs 10 lakh from the businessman, but later demanded Rs 30 lakh more.

A first information report (FIR) was then lodged at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station against Tabrez and his aides Avinash More of Sahkarnagar, Sagar Dhumal of Upper Indiranagar and Kumar alias Pappu Savkar of Saswad, under sections 386, 387, 504, 506 (2), 507, 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Crime branch sleuths have arrested More and Dhumal in this case and a search was underway for Savkar. Police said Tabrez is a notorious criminal and a member of the dreaded Bapu Nayar gang in Pune.

Police said Tabrez is currently lodged in Nagpur prison. When he was lodged in Kolhapur jail, he allegedly made calls from multiple mobile phone numbers to extort money from the businessman. Further investigation is on, police said.

Cops have appealed to the traders and business community to come forward and lodge complaints if any criminal elements demand extortion money, the press release stated.
