Traffic on Chandigarh’s Jan Marg to be restricted tomorrow in view of Samyukt Kisan Morcha march

Chandigarh is bracing for a massive gathering of farmer groups entering the city from Punjab, Haryana, and nearby regions, as the SKM is marking five years since the farmers’ agitation against the now-repealed farm laws.

Traffic movement on Chandigarh’s Jan Marg will be restricted on Wednesday from Kajheri Chowk (Sector 42/43–52/53) to Sector 42/43 Small Chowk, extending up to Attawa Chowk (Sector 35/36/42/43), according to an advisory issued by the police ahead of a farmers’ march organised to mark five years since the agitation against the now-repealed farm laws.

Chandigarh is bracing for a massive gathering of farmer groups entering the city from Punjab, Haryana, and nearby regions. Contingents from over 30 farmer organisations part of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) will make their way into the city, potentially affecting traffic flow throughout the tricity.

With more than 10,000 farmers expected to converge on Chandigarh for the SKM’s fifth anniversary mobilisation, road users have been cautioned to expect diversions and delays across major arterial roads.

In addition to the Jan Marg restrictions, traffic on the V-4 road in Sector 43—from Sector 43/44 Light Point to Judicial Academy Light Point, up to Sector 42/43 Small Chowk—will also be diverted, the advisory said.

Sumer Partap Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, advised the public to use alternative routes and follow real-time updates on the social media handles of the police—@trafficchd on X, @trafficchd on Instagram, and @ChandigarhTrafficPolice on Facebook.

“We appeal to the general public to cooperate with the police, and any inconvenience caused on account of these restrictions/diversions is deeply regretted,” read the advisory.

To facilitate the march and maintain order, the Sector 43 Dussehra Ground has been designated as the official demonstration site. The city police will deploy nearly 3,000 personnel across sensitive points, borders, and internal routes to manage both traffic and law and order, using barricading, mobile patrol units, drone surveillance, and route-monitoring teams.

The administration is maintaining heightened alertness, particularly in the wake of the November 10 disruption, when a rally linked to the Panjab University senate polls threw traffic into chaos. With university gates shut and protesters breaking locks to enter the campus, major roads remained gridlocked for hours. A criminal case was later registered over violence and property damage.

Areas around Sector 43, Panjab University and key junctions are expected to experience the heaviest impact on Wednesday, especially with groups entering from the Mohali side.
