Pune to experience extreme heat for the next 48 hours

Pune would also see a further rise in temperature in the next three to four days, according to an IMD scientist.

Pune and its surrounding areas are expected to experience another bout of high temperature for the next 48 hours. On Sunday, Pune’s maximum temperature as measured by the Central Observatory exceeded 40 degree Celsius at 2.30 pm.

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s weather forecasting department, said the increase in temperature would be accompanied by humid conditions which would cause extreme discomfort for the city residents. This condition, Kashyapi said, would continue for the next 48 hours, and that the city would see a further rise in temperature in the next three to four days.

Kashyapi said the present hot and humid condition is mainly due to the influx of hot air from Gujarat which is wafting in over the state from the Konkan area. He said the high maximum temperature — which has been above 38-40 degree Celsius for most of April in Pune — along with a bit of humidity in the area has contributed to what he said was the hot and humid condition.

With rain virtually absent, the soil is dry and gets heated more. The moderate presence of El Nino, the warm ocean current in the Pacific Ocean, has resulted in a constant rise in temperature. Wind discontinuity has reduced almost all chances of rainfall and would contribute to the present heat wave-like condition in Pune.

Night time temperature has not provided much relief and Pune has been experiencing hot and uncomfortable nights.

“Precautions should be taken to escape the heat, especially during the day time. If avoidable, do not venture out in the open between 11.30 am to 4.30 pm. Ensure you are properly hydrated,” said Kashyapi.

Kashyapi also suggested people should also cover themselves well before leaving and avoid spicy food.
