A video that surfaced after the murder of a 28-year-old accountant shows the assailant, later identified as her colleague, with a cleaver in the parking lot of a multinational business process outsourcing (BPO) company in Pune. A little over a minute long, the video shows dozens of bystanders at the spot, none of whom intervened during the attack.

In the shaky video, which has since gone viral, Krishna Satyanarayan Kanoja, 30, is seen wielding the cleaver and Shubhada Shankar Kodare calling someone on her phone. Kanoja is then seen taking the phone away from Kodare as she collapses. Kanoja attacked Kodare at around 6.15 pm on Tuesday in the parking lot of WNS Global Services in Yerawada.

Kanoja is seen speaking on the phone, dropping the cleaver, and being surrounded by the onlookers who start hitting and overpowering him. Meanwhile, some people go towards Kodare even as Kanoja is taken away.

The police said they reached the spot after someone from the crowd called them, and took Kanoja, a resident of Shivajinagar, into their custody.

The police said colleagues of Kodare, a diabetic, took her to the hospital where she succumbed due to excessive bleeding. “Primary information suggests that due to her condition resulting impaired clotting response, she suffered excessive bleeding and succumbed to the injury during treatment,” a senior officer, who is part of the murder investigation, said later.

The officer also said Kanoja has been diagnosed with an ophthalmic disorder, and he has to undergo a procedure every two to three years.

The police investigation shows Kodare had borrowed around Rs 4.5 lakh from the accused over the last two years, saying she needed the money for her father’s treatment. The police said Kanoja had to undergo eye surgery, and he had been demanding his money back from the victim, but she kept promising that she would pay back the amount soon.

The senior officer, who is part of the probe, said Kanoja left WNS for a year, and rejoined as senior accounts around four months ago. The officer added that Kanoja and Kodare knew each other from Kanoja’s previous tenure with WNS.

Kodare’s sister filed the First Information Report (FIR) in the case at the Yerwada police station. Kanoja was produced before a court in Pune on Wednesday and has been remanded to police custody until January 13.
