Three people were injured and five vehicles were damaged after a huge banyan tree collapsed in Pune’s Rasta Peth area on Thursday night amid heavy rains. The tree collapse led to the road being closed to traffic for over four hours till fire brigade personnel cleared the area.

The incident took place around 9.45 pm on Thursday in front of Shashikant Dairy at Datt Club Chowk in Rasta Peth.

Fire brigade officials said the banyan tree with a large girth was completely uprooted as it collapsed on the street in front of a row of shops.

“After receiving a call at the Fire Brigade control room, rescue vans and fire tenders were deployed. But by the time our teams reached the spot, local citizens had taken three people — one who was on his bike and two other two who were standing next to him — had sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. According to our preliminary information, their injuries are not serious in nature,” said a fire brigade official.

Three two-wheelers, a goods carrier tempo and a handcart selling snacks were damaged in the incident. A small tin shed of a shop was damaged as well.
