A proposal by the Directorate of Higher Education seeking a second entrance exam for Bachelor of Education course (BEd) has been rejected by the education department.

“We had sent a proposal seeking second BEd entrance exam for students, but the education department did not approve it. Now,the BEd exam will be held next year,” said P R Gaikwad,Director,Higher Education.

He added,“The proposal to conduct a second round of entrance exam was floated after it was found that many seats were lying vacant in colleges.”

There are as many as 362 colleges in the state that offer three-year B.Ed course. Almost,40 per cent seats are lying vacant in various colleges across the state. The worst affected are private colleges where several seats are lying vacant. The colleges had requested the higher education department to conduct another entrance exam for students who failed to appear for the first exam.

“This could have been a good opportunity for students who failed to appear in the first exam owing to reasons best known to them. There were students who appeared for the exam but did not go through the Common Admission Procedure to secure admission in government colleges,” said an official.

He added,“Now,students who did not appear for the CAP rounds can not claim seats in government colleges. They can only apply for the management seats.”
