A COURT in Pune on Thursday granted bail to Dr Pranjal Khewalkar — the son-in-law of former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse — and two others who were among the seven persons arrested after a drug party raid in the last week of July.
Khewalkar, the husband of Eknath Khadse’s daughter Rohini Khadse, who is the NCP (SP) Maharashtra Women’s Wing president, and the six others including two women were held after the Pune Police’s Crime Branch raided a rented studio apartment in the upmarket Kharadi area around 3.20 am on July 27 after receiving a tip off about a party there.
Those arrested included Khewalkar (41) who is a doctor, Nikhil Jethanand Poptani (35) a cigarette trader, Sameer Fakir Mohammed Sayyed (41) a hardware business, Sachin Sonaji Bhombe (42) a private firm employee and Shripad Mohan Yadav (27) a construction businessman and two women have been identified as Isha Devjyot Singh (22) and Prachi Gopal Sharma (23). Police have said 2.7 grams of cocaine, 70 grams of marijuana were seized during the raid.
Advocate Pushkar Durge, who represented Khewalkar in the court, told The Indian Express that a court in Pune on Thursday had granted bail to three persons: Khewalkar, Yadav and Sharma. The Pune Police had claimed that the raid was conducted after they received a tip off from a confidential informant that a party was happening at a specific location in Kharadi. Based on the information a raid was conducted in apartment number 102 of the Staybird Azure Suite building in Kharadi.
While an extension in police custody earlier, the police have submitted before the court that based on the report from Cyber experts and witness statements, it has come to light that Khewalkar and four other men were in contact with each other from the past. Police had told the court that accused persons communicated through Instagram chats about procuring the drugs. Police had also told the court that Khewalkar had booked the rooms in the studio apartments around 20 times in 2024 and 2025.
