Both the ruling NCP and Congress have staked claim to the post of chairperson of the city improvement committee,an important panel of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The post, for which elections will be held on Friday, has gained further importance as the revised development plan of the city is awaiting the nod of this committee.

The election to the post of chairpersons of the legal committee, sports committee and women and child welfare committee would take place on Friday. However, the main fight is for the post of chairperson of city improvement committee.

Apart from NCP and Congress, the saffron combine is also eyeing the post. The NCP,which emerged as the single largest party in the recent civic polls, managed to get the post of mayor while alliance partner Congress was given deputy mayor post. The NCP also got the post of chairperson of the standing committee with the support of Congress.

Both the ruling parties have a consensus on posts of chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of sports committee, and women and child welfare committee. The NCP has offered the post of chairperson of the legal committee to Congress while claiming chairperson post of the city improvement committee. “As per the discussion between senior NCP and Congress leaders, the chairperson of city improvement committee should be from the NCP,” said NCP leader Subhash Jagtap.

Congress leader Arvind Shinde said his party wanted the post of chairperson of city improvement committee and is set to contest the elections for it. “The party will disclose its strategy only during the election,” he added.
