PMC to improve critical 50km stretch on 9 roads under ‘Mission 15 roads’
The critical stretches include 8.7 km of Nagar road, 6km of Solapur road, 6.8 km of Magarpatta road, 5.5km of North Main road, 7km of Sinhagad road, 3.2km of Ganeshkhind road, 2km of Sangamwadi road, 7.5km of Baner road and 3.3km of Karve road.
The PMC has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the fourth package that includes Narhe, Ambegaon Budruk, Kalewadi, and Jambhulwadi with an estimated project cost of Rs 389 crore.
Under its ‘Mission 15’ roads to improve travel efficiency and enhance safety of commuters, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to prepare the ‘corridor improvement plan’ of a 50km stretch on nine main roads of the city that will have a comprehensive plan for development and improvement of corridors and junctions in the city.
“The PMC had redeveloped Bremen chowk to Parihar chowk road in Aundh, Jangli Maharaj road, Fergusson College road and few others as per the Urban Street Design Guidelines (USDG). However, the stretch now selected will not be redeveloped but improved as per USDG through necessary changes,” said Nikhil Mijar, transport planner of PMC.
The main objective is to minimize conflict between different modes of transports, enhance road safety for cyclists and pedestrians, promote commuter well-being and productivity through optimized travel times, said Mijar adding it will also enable efficient parking management, organize informal vending activity and create attractive urban spaces.
Work will be taken up by adopting strategies to reduce transport related emissions and prioritizing safe, inclusive and sustainable mobility, said Mijar.
There will be mapping of roads through differential global positioning system (DGPS) survey technique with details about all junctions, bus-bays, pick-up and drop-off points, Metro stations, offshoot roads, entry and exit points of surrounding plots, street furniture, tree and right of Way. The traffic survey will be done to identify current traffic volume, road capacity calculations, on street pedestrian and cyclists count, parking survey.
“The data will be analysed to identify key traffic trends and patterns and potential areas for improvement or intervention. The Corridor Improvement Plan for each stretch will consider existing and projected travel demand and designing of the roads will be done on the basis of it,” said the transport planner adding the design proposal will highlight lands that have to be compulsorily acquired to maintain a consistent width of the right of way and establish continuity of the service roads, footpaths and cycling tracks.

The plan will identify locations for storm water storage and aquifer recharge of groundwater reserves. It will enhance facilities and infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and persons with disability (PwD), including sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, shared-use paths, public plazas and landscape improvements to encourage active transportation and accessibility. It will optimise parking to alleviate parking shortages and reduce parking-related traffic congestion.
