After taking steps to ensure drinking water is not used for construction, washing centres and swimming pools, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration is preparing a detailed schedule for implementing the water cut in the city that would come into effect as per the directions of the canal committee.
The four dams providing water to city — Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar — are only upto 50 per cent full due to poor rainfall, whereas they are usually over 70 per cent full during this time of year.
“There are no directions given to us for a water cut, but considering the situation, we are preparing to introduce it. It would be implemented only after a decision is taken by the canal committee,” said a civic officer.

The water situation was very poor, he said, adding it was better for the administration to plan in advance for a water cut instead of preparing for it after the decision to implement water cut was already taken.
In the recent canal committee meeting, guardian minister Girish Bapat decided that a water cut would not be implemented in the city and a review of the situation would be taken after 15 days.
The PMC decided to introduce restrictions on water usage by directing the civic administration to penalise whoever uses water for construction activities, washing centres or swimming pools.
