PMC increases funds to meet villages’ drinking water needs

The PMC said it has been spending funds for the last seven to eight years for providing water through tankers to the villagers.

After being dragged to court by residents of Uruli Devachi and Phursungi villages over disposal of garbage generated in the city at the landfill site in their jurisdiction, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed to spend an additional Rs 2.48 crore to meet the drinking water demands of the protesting villagers.

The villagers have been protesting against the civic body for disposal of waste at the landfill site in their village jurisdiction saying it has led to degradation of environment in the area.

However, the PMC undertook development project in the villages as per the demand by villagers. At present, the villagers had taken up the issue in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) seeking a ban disposal of waste at the landfill site.

Meanwhile, the civic administration has proposed to spend additional funds to fulfill the water supply needs of the villagers.

The PMC said it has been spending funds for the last seven to eight years for providing water through tankers to the villagers.

This year, the PMC made a budgetary provision of Rs 68 lakh for the purpose. It has been providing 40 tankers daily for supplying water to Phursungi village, 16 tankers to Uruli Devachi village and 8 tankers to Shevalewadi.

“The demand for water supply through tankers to the villages has increased and there is a shortage of funds to meet the demands. Thus, there is a need of an additional Rs 2.48 crore for the purpose,” said additional municipal commissioner Omprakash Bakoria.

The additional funds would enable the PMC to generate 80 more trips of water tankers for Phursungi village and 50 more trips to Uruli Devachi and Shewalewadi villages everyday, the proposal said.
