Peshwa-era Sardar Majumdar Ganeshotsav in Kasba Peth begins; celebrates its 311th year
During the five-day celebration, kirtankars offer kirtan services in the presence of Lord Ganesha

The Peshwa-era Sardar Mujumdar Ganeshotsav began on Sunday, August 24, from Bhadrapada Shuddha Pratipada. This year marks the 311th year of the festival. The Ganeshotsav has been celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Sardar Mujumdar Wada in Kasba Peth, Pune, since 1714, following traditional religious practices.
The late Sardar Abasaheb Mujumdar and subsequent generations have preserved this Peshwa-era Ganeshotsav tradition. Anupama Mujumdar, Abasaheb’s granddaughter-in-law, now upholds this legacy.
“The Sardar Mujumdar Ganeshotsav is celebrated from Bhadrapada Shuddha Pratipada to Rishipanchami, from today, Sunday, to Thursday (August 28). On Sunday, the Vallabhesh Ganpati idol was installed on a peacock throne in the Ganesh Mahal at the Mujumdar Wada,” said Anupama Mujumdar.
She adds that in 1714, Naro Nalkanth, also known as Ayaba Mujumdar, found the Narmadeya Ganpati idol in the Karha River. Since then, the Ganeshotsav has been celebrated, as evidenced by the expense records over that period.
During the five-day celebration, kirtankars offer kirtan services in the presence of Lord Ganesha. Every morning, shehnai performances take place, and kirtans are held in the evening. The idol of Lord Ganesha is ten-armed and made of five metals. His wife, Vallabha, sits on his left lap, which is why the deity is called Vallabhesh Ganpati.
On Sunday, the idol was installed on the peacock throne in the presence of priests. From from 5 to 6 PM every evening, Kalyani Namjoshi will deliver a discourse.
