With the rule of wearing helmets within PCB limits coming into effect from Saturday, schoolchildren were seen standing on the stretch between Council Hall and Headquarters Southern Command and congratulating bikers who were wearing helmets. Policemen and Corps of Military Police (CMP) personnel also accompanied the students and warned those not wearing helmets that they would not be allowed entry in Cantonment area from Thursday if caught without helmets.
On Day One,Local Military Authority (LMA) had set up check-points at three locations within the PCB limits Ghorpadi Police Station,Council Hall and Prince of Wales Drive. They started their work around 10 am and continued till late evening. They called it a reasonably successful experiment.
We will change the locations of the three teams, but till Wednesday the check points will be the same. The idea is to get people used to being inquired at these particular locations. Right now,we are not denying entry to those without helmets, but from Thursday people not wearing helmets will not be allowed to pass through Cantonment, said a sub-area official.
The checking at the three locations began around 10 am. Over 2,000 roses were distributed. Bikers wearing helmets were given a yellow card which called them road stars, while those not wearing helmets received a warning and a red card which urged them to start wearing one.
Teams of military police and local police were accompanied by 62 Class XI students of Kendriya Vidyalaya,Southern Command. We have been on the spot since 10 am and will be here till 1 and again come back in the evening, said Bhawna Danak,a post graduate teacher of Physics at Kendriya Vidyalaya,Southern Command.
Other schools are likely to volunteer. We are happy with the response on day one. In some schools, principals asked their teachers and staff to wear helmets while riding to schools, the sub-area official said.
