After State Home Minister R R Patil reviewed the functioning of the trafficop system over the weekend, the city police said they will soon upgrade the system according to the ministers suggestions.
DCP Manoj Patil (traffic) said, the Home Minister has asked us to upgrade the trafficop system so as to enable it to read the smart card-based driving licences. He also directed us to maintain a record of the offenders with details of the offence. We are working on it accordingly.
Patil said the Home Minister enquired about the status of accidents in the city. The traffic police officials gave him a whole presentation on the rate of accidents and the accident-prone areas in the city. We also apprised him of the initiatives of our department to bring down the accident rate.
He was also told about the functioning of the traffic I cop system. The data of each vehicle like its registration number, colour, class and even the engine number of the vehicleis stored in the centralised server, which the traffic police can access on Blackberry.
We explained to him how the whole system has been instrumental in detecting a large number of stolen vehicles in the city. In addition, using the traficop system,we also detected the owners of unclaimed vehicles, which are now in the process of being handed over to them, Patil said.
The minister was also told about our plans for the year ahead to address the traffic problems in the city, Patil said.
