A 32-year-old man from Pune who was declared brain-dead has saved the lives of five people with his organs. His heart, liver, lungs, pancreas and kidneys were retrieved on Friday.

The lungs and one kidney were allocated to patients at the DPU Super Speciality Hospital in Pimpri. The heart was allocated to a patient at the Sir HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai, and one kidney, liver and pancreas were allocated to patients at the Jupiter Hospital in Pune.

The man is survived by his parents and a younger sister, according to the DPU Super Speciality Hospital. He had suffered an intracranial bleed with an intraventricular haemorrhage. He was declared brain-dead on Wednesday and his family members were counselled by the transplant coordinator. The family later took a collective decision to donate his organs.

On Thursday, the National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation released an alert about the availability of donor organs at the hospital, as per the organ allocation system.

Dr Yashraj Patil, trustee and treasurer of Pune’s Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth Society, said, “The donor was a case of brain death, and we were able to get consent from the donor’s family through effective counselling. The multi-organ transplant was successfully carried out by our expert surgeons. The heart was required to reach Mumbai within the stipulated time frame, for which we created the green corridor from DPU Private Super Speciality Hospital to Mumbai with great efficiency. The heart reached Mumbai in just one and a half hours. We are thankful to the family for their noble act and glad that we could save multiple lives through this.”
