Though the cute-school-boy image has not undergone any major changes but the accessories that complete that image are subject to market demands and innovations, have. The age-old khaki school bag, with just one cabinet and no extra pocket was a hit among the school going kids, has now been relegated to becoming a symbolic representation of rural education in vernacular movies. The Camlin geometry set case, army print school bags, tiffin carrier and simple water bottles – today might no longer be seen or even heard of now,but were and will always be,for people of that era, symbolic of their unforgettable school life.

Speaking about her seven-year-old daughter,Tina Batra, says,“I recently bought a trolley school bag for my daughter and she was very excited to have it. Now,she would not have to carry her school bags on her shoulder and she can drag the bag to school with ease. This reminded me of my days, when my brother and me also used to jump with joy after getting our new khaki school bag. Those khaki bags were symbolic of school life despite of being absolutely simple.”

Krishna Khandare, corporate manager,Wildcraft India, says,“We have been dealing in school bags and the change shows that quest for comfort is the driving force behind any invention or change. Though the khaki school bags were also serving the purpose of carrying books to school, what they did not provide was the comfort in carrying heavy books and good organisation of items in the bag. Today parents who are both, aware and conscious ,want to give the best to thier children and can also afford it hence all new avatars of school accessories flood the market.”

While Abacus has made a strong come back of sorts not all are as lucky. For example the slate or pati – The never-worn-out item is a thing to remember for students of the yesteryears,as most began their education with it. The difference in the image of the past and the present is that the generation then was happy with their wooden frame black slate, pencil chalk and a cloth duster (which was used as eraser),while the present day kids (who find it difficult to recognise it),use the magic slate board with inbuilt erasers of different colours and shapes.

Three-year-old Raghav Kulkarni, broke into tears, when his father very proudly showed his own slate board and asked him to start with that, because the kid had already seen a magic slate-board at his playschool and wanted one for himself. “I kept my slate board carefully because I always wanted my kid to start hi education on the same slate board, but after he saw one magic board,he refuses to write on old slate board. I had to buy him one and now he is happy and keeps scribbling on it the whole day. I was saving for his education but I must also consider his accessories, which are very expensive,” says Pawan Kulkarni,Raghav’s father.
