Off the edge

Paromita Sen,a mass communication student from a renowned city college had her goals clearly etched out for herself and was determined to not let the market forces dampen her spirits, when she decided to apply for a job.

Even with on campus recruitments happening, students are playing it safe by applying off it to better their chances

Paromita Sen,a mass communication student from a renowned city college had her goals clearly etched out for herself and was determined to not let the market forces dampen her spirits, when she decided to apply for a job. Under a well-planned career move and very unlike the usual trends in her college,Sen made sure that she was not dependant on the placement cell of her college to get her,her dream job.

“Last year many of my seniors got revised packages, in which salaries were slashed drastically. As a result even I decided back then that I will not depend on the college for a job offer and therefore I applied to a newspaper where I had done my internship and got through. At least I have one good offer in my hand,” explains Sen.

Post-slowdown,the job scenario is witnessing an attitudinal change among students, who are not betting their fortunes being replenished vie the on-campus recruitments and are playing it safe by applying off the campus too. Diwesh Diwakar,manager,Quadrangle,(naukri.com),says,“As compared to last year, the scenario has changed for the better and the market is offering good opportunities to students both on and off campus. While on-campus packages are high, companies are not shying away from accepting resumes directly from the students.”

Harshwardhan Malik,an MBA student, says,“Despite getting good grades and having four years of work experience,I was highly disappointed when I couldn’t manage to get a job till the mid-week of February. I applied off campus, where I was able to make it. It also proved lucky,as since then I also cleared two other interviews.”

Meghana Kulkarni,HR manager, designtech, says,“We do visit campus for recruitment but this year nearly 60 to 70 per cent application have come directly from students, which is a good sign.”
