City-based Yashaswi Institute of Technology (YIT) has something to cheer about this Diwali. The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) has decided to emulate YITs model of learning on a national scale. The learn and earn scheme of the institute was appreciated by the CEO of NSDC,Dilip Chenoy, who promised to implement the scheme on a national basis, said officials.
Chenoy had visited our institute and was interested in knowing about how we make our students employable along with imparting education. After studying the pattern,he promised to emulate the model on a national level next year, said Vishwesh Kulkarni, president,YIT. This was also confirmed by the officials of NSDC.
The learn and earn scheme provides the students job experience along with a monthly stipend. The college was started in 2010 and the first batch of students will pass out next year. Currently, there are about 9,000 students in our institute. They work for about eight hours daily and are given a monthly stipend. No additional fee is charged by the institute; students only pay the nominal university fees, said Kulkarni.
YIT is affiliated to Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU).
The minimum criteria to get admission is Class X pass with minimum 55 per cent marks. Students have to also appear for a written test and interview after which they are sent to various companies to work. They manage to earn a minimum stipend of Rs 6,000 per month. We offer four-year diplomas in mechanical, industrial and electrical engineering, said a YIT official.
We have a partnership with over 140 industries and there are some firms where 400 of our students are working. This is their last year and 100 students have already been hired. We are sure of getting 50 per cent placement in the industries they are working at and the other 50 per cent will be easily placed as they will have four years of industry experience, said Kulkarni.
From next year, diplomas in industrial drug science, food science, retail management, supply chain and logistic management and hospitality management will be introduced under the Yashaswi Institute of Skill Development, said an official.
