Union Minister for State for Science and Technology Pritviraj Chavan on Friday said the government has allocated around Rs 1,800 crore for Nano Mission to promote nanotechnology and nano science in the country. It is an exciting area that is developing fast and we do not want to lag behind, he said.
Chavan was speaking at the inauguration of a seminar on Nano Technology Materials and Composites for Frontier Applications, arranged by Bharati Vidyapeeth University (BVU).
He said the government is keen on promoting nano technology and nano science, and has established a nano science and technology institute at Mohali. The institute offers MTech and MS courses in nanotechnology and nano science, the Minister said.
We have already spent around Rs 1,400 crore for nanotechnology from 2007 and government institutes will be developing tie-ups with foreign institutes for research. The government will soon come out with regulatory framework for nano science, he said.
Presently,India is spending only one per cent of GDP on research and development. There is a need to improve contribution of private sector in this area, which is only one-fourth of the total spending at present, Chavan said. BVU Chancellor Patangrao Kadam and vice-chancellor Shivajirao Kadam and many senior professors from India and abroad were present at the event.
