No CCTV cameras,poor security: DCP

The police said the three housing societies targeted by the thieves were populated by working couples.

The incident has once again highlighted the lax security in the newly-developed fringe areas of Pune. Of late break-ins in housing societies have reached alarming proportions.

The police said the three housing societies targeted by the thieves were populated by working couples. DCP (Zone) III Shahji Umap pointed to the absence of CCTV cameras in the housing societies and poor presence of guards.

Realty boom since the IT revolution have changed the skyline of fringe areas of both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Areas like Wakad,Moshi Tathawade,Pashan,Sus and Hinjewadi have witnessed rapid growth of housing societies. Although the societies vie with each other in terms of amenities and interiors,when it comes to security it is lax,police said.

DCP Umap said the main issue plaguing the housing societies is the lack of sensitisation on matters of security.

Basics like employing security guards from reputed agencies are often overlooked,leave alone having CCTV cameras, he said.

Another problem identified by the police is the multiple entrance to the housing societies. The police said this is an open invitation for burglars. For houses of working couples the threat increases as the lifts of the housing societies are mostly unattended. Although the police conducts regular rounds,in terms of visibility much needs to be done.

Umap said the police stations have been asked to conduct meetings with the housing society members to sensitise them about the matter.

At our level we will be holding a meeting at various localities to educate the people about the issue, he said.
