With a desire to help society, city girl Shayari Shah donated her first pay packet to three social organisations working in various fields. The unique gesture came as a fulfilment of Shayari’’s pledge she had taken on the first day of her college.

Shayari passed out from Cummins College of Engineering for Women this year. An electronics and telecommunication engineer, she got recruited to work at a reputed software company in the campus interview held last year. After completing her last semester engineering examination on June 13 this year, she immediately joined the company’s Mumbai office on June 22.

Shayari received her first salary on August 1. She came to Pune with the money and told her parents that she wanted to donate it to the social organisations. Her parents Vivek and Meena Shah responded positively and also helped her find out social organisations. She donated Rs 5,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively to the Matoshri and Nivara old age homes in the city and Rs 5,000 to Vilas Shivlal Sarvoday Trust in Solapur district.

“ Matoshri old age home is near our college. I used to see it on my way to college. On the first day of college itself I had decided that whenever I would start earning,I would donate my first salary to social organisations. I am glad that I could donate to theMatoshri old age home also,” said Shayari. The family background Shayari comes from has prompted her to make this gesture. Her grandfather runs the Vilas Shivlal Sarvoday Trust working for animals in Solapur district. The motto of this trust is ‘our voice for voiceless’. Her father Vivek has been involved in various activities of ‘Art of Living’such as blood donation and tree plantation in villages. Shayari’s younger sister Nupur is also an active member of an NGO ‘Yugpath’ and has worked as a writer for blind students. “ When I see my father and grandfather working for society,I too thought of doing something for society in my own capacity. I have not done something great, but I felt satisfied with whatever I did,” she said.
