As Neuroimaging has become an indispensable tool for the study of neural development, clinical diagnosis and for understanding higher brain functions, scientists from across the world will participate in the third Scientific and Engineering Research Council (SERC) workshop of the Department of Science and Technology on ‘Imaging the Nervous system’ starting tomorrow at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Pashan.

Pioneering researchers from across the globe will be serving as faculty at the workshop,Dr V S Rao,from IISER said.

The international faculty includes Prof Brian Salzberg (University of Pennsylvania) and Prof Larry Cohen (Yale University),both pioneers in imaging neural activity using calcium imaging and voltage sensitive dyes. Dr Aniruddha Das (Columbia University) has contributed to the development of a flavoprotein autofluorescence-based functional imaging and discovered anticipatory response in fMRI based imaging.

Prof Roland Strauss (Johannes Gutenberg University,Mainz) has done pioneering research in insect locomotion and vision and their implications to robotics would also participate alongside Prof Mriganka Sur (MIT),who is studying development and plasticity of the cerebral cortex. Prof Sur will talk about research at the MIT laboratory which demonstrates how specificity and plasticity are both fundamental requirements for brain wiring.
