Murder in Yerwada jail: Family assured proper probe, finally accepts body of kin; 4 inmates booked

The family was furious over slackness of authorities due to which the victim was killed

Tension prevailed in Sassoon hospital on Friday morning, as the family of the undertrial inmate who was murdered at Yerawada Central Prison refused to accept his body.

It was after the intervention of senior police officials who assured a proper investigation into the matter that the family accepted the body of the deceased 26-year-old Mahesh Mahadev Chandanshive.

Meanwhile, an FIR was lodged against four undertrials —Aniket Samdur, Mahesh Mane, Aditya Mure and Ganesh Mote—for allegedly murdering Chandanshive in the open space near barrack 1 of Circle 2 in Yerawada Central Prison around 3.10 pm on Thursday. Police booked the accused under sections 302, 323, 34 of the Indian Penal code and sections of the Indian Arms Act and the Prison Act.

A resident of Chikhali area, Chandanshive was lodged in Yerwada jail following his arrest by Pimpri Chinchwad police in a criminal case in November last year. Police said the accused persons, who were also lodged in jail for their alleged involvement in criminal offences, had a past dispute with Chandanshive. They allegedly attacked Chandanshive with a piece of a metal hinge of a door and a pair of scissors used by barbers in prison for cutting hair. Chandanshive sustained severe injuries on his neck and abdomen causing his death. The postmortem was conducted at the Sassoon Hospital.

The family and supporters of the deceased gathered at the hospital on Friday morning and refused to accept his body. They demanded action against prison authorities for lapses that allowed the murder.

The investigation officer, assistant police inspector SN Lahane, said, “The family accepted the body in the evening. After investigation, the accused will be dealt with as per legal procedure.
