Murder convict escapes from Pune’s Yerawada open jail, second incident this year

The police said the man was reported missing during the attendance conducted by Yerawada Central Prison staff on Wednesday afternoon.

A convict in a murder case escaped from the open jail in Yerawada Central Prison in Pune on Wednesday, the police said.

Police said Anil Meghdas Pateniya (35), a native of Titwala in Thane district, was reported missing during the attendance conducted by the prison staff on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, Pateniya was arrested for allegedly committing a murder in June 2016. In December 2023, a court convicted him in the murder case and awarded him life imprisonment.

Initially lodged in Nashik jail, he was shifted to Yerwada Central Prison for serving his punishment in June 2024. He was shifted to the open jail due to his good behaviour, said an officer.

Senior prison officer Rajendra Marale lodged a separate FIR against Pateniya at the Yerwada police station under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, for escaping from jail.

Assistant Police Inspector Vishal Takale is investigating the case. Police have launched a search for the accused.

In August this year, Raju Dusane (43), a murder case convict, fled from the open jail in Yerwada. but was nabbed within three days and put behind bars.
