For monsoon season, PMC gets senior officers for night time disaster management duty

Officers on duty will keep control of the disaster management cell at ward offices, going on surprise calls to ensure they are functioning properly and calls to the cell are addressed without delay.

To ensure a quick response to disaster situations this monsoon, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) appointed senior officers of the rank of Deputy Municipal Commissioner for the night hours at the civic body’s main disaster management control room.

“Incidents of waterlogging, flooding, trees falling and other situations arise in the city due to excess rain or heavy showers. Various civic departments including those of sewages, roads, gardens, fire control and ward offices are involved in managing the situation as per the requirement,” said municipal commissioner Rajendra Bhosale.

“The disaster management control room gets information of any situation from citizens. The same needs to be conveyed to civic departments concerned andcoordiate rescues while providing all necessary help to persons in need. Coordinating with the District Collectorate, state Irrigation department and state power utility is needed, depending on the situation. Therefore, there is a need for a senior level officer on night duty at the Disaster Management Cell,” Bhosale said.

The officer on night duty will have to be in the Disaster Management office from 8 pm to 8 am. Daytime operations will be handled by officers on duty during regular office hours. The list of officers on night duty and one during the day include Raju Nandkar, Madhav Jagtap, Sandip Kadam, Nitin Udas, Yunus Pathan, Rahul Jagtap and Vijay Landge.

Officers on duty will keep control of the disaster management cell at ward offices, going on surprise calls to ensure they are functioning properly and calls to the cell are addressed without delay. The calls are also made to ensure the cell coordinates with the IMD, irrigation department and District Collectorate while sharing information with disaster management cell of Pune division and state government.

They will also monitor the media and issue directions to the local ward office for immediate action when required.
