Miniaturisation of technology is the key, says Saraswat

Scientific advisor to the Ministry of Defence Padmashree Dr V K Saraswat today called on scientists to focus on the miniaturisation of technology.

Scientific advisor to the Ministry of Defence Padmashree Dr V K Saraswat today called on scientists to focus on the miniaturisation of technology. “We have to look at materials which are smaller in form — miniaturisation in systems is essential, where energy released is much more controlled,” Saraswat said while speaking at the inaugural lecture of the seventh International High Energy Explosives conference and exhibit.

Observing that Indian bombs were larger in weight and size and less effective in releasing energy than those produced in other countries,Saraswat said mass manufacuturing was a challenge and said that the ordnance factories have to gear up.

Dr S Sivaram, director,National Chemical Laboratory, who was guest of honour, said that the definition of enemy has changed over the last decade. We are now fighting those within the country and not necessarily those at the borders. So we have to deploy tools to selectively weed out these elements without causing damage to the society. He reminded that it was essential that defense research organisations realise that the technology they have developed to fight the enemy could be used against its own citizens as well.
