MG Road Walking Plaza to return

The much-loved walking plaza on M G Road discontinued in 2008 could bloom again, days before the third anniversary of the tragic Mumbai terror attacks which had led to the closure of the plaza for security reasons.

The much-loved walking plaza on M G Road discontinued in 2008 could bloom again, days before the third anniversary of the tragic Mumbai terror attacks which had led to the closure of the plaza for security reasons. The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) is all set to announce its comeback in a new avatar.

PCB sources said talks were on with Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP),Traffic,to make M G Road a no-vehicle zone on Saturdays. It will take at least two weeks by the time the decision is implemented.

“The matter was discussed in the board meeting on October 28. One of the points put forth was closure of M G Road to vehicular traffic on Saturdays. The implementation of the plan involves arrangements such as diversion of traffic, alternate parking arrangements and so on. We are expecting that by mid-November,the idea should materialise,” one of the officers of PCB said.

M G Road was turned into a walking plaza in 2006,when the road was made a no-vehicle zone on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The initiative was stopped in the aftermath of 26/ 11. The plaza was started for a short while on an experimental basis in the first week of December 2008 with tight security measures, but was discontinued again in February 2009.

However what will make the plaza different from the last time is that this time,it will be a no-vehicle zone only on Saturdays. Not only that, there will be no hawkers, eateries, stall or music shows. “The last time M G Road was turned into a walking plaza,PCB was an active participant in terms of allotting stalls on the street. It was later outsourced to an external agency. The last leg also witnessed small scale musical shows, food stalls, hawkers and other such entertainment activities. This time the board plans to do away with these activities. This time,it will be only a no-vehicle zone right from 6 am. There will be no hawkers, music shows, eateries or stalls on the road,” said the officer.
